Welcome to 2024! It is my pleasure to serve as President of NAIFA-Wisconsin this year. As you renew your members this year, and recruit your colleagues as new members, remember that advocacy is a central part of what we do. Without a strong industry advocate, legislators and regulators can implement policies that harm our business. No other topic highlights this better than NAIFA's opposition to the Department of Labor's rehashed Fiduciary Rule. This reintroduced proposal will eliminate consumer choice and put at risk the ability of middle-class Americans to access financial advice. NAIFA will continue to lead the fight against this proposal.

The Board of Directors for the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) has been announced.

As the curtain closes on the year 2023, so does a remarkable chapter in the career of an exceptional individual - Laura P. DeGolier, CLU, LUTCF, FSS, RICP. A loyal member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) since 1980, Laura bids adieu to a distinguished career as she enters the well-deserved realm of retirement.

Hello NAIFA-Wisconsin! As my year as President comes to an end, I thought we could reflect on the many accomplishments NAIFA-Wisconsin has achieved in 2023:

Start the New Year out right with an informative NAIFA Live session and book study with your fellow NAIFA members. Not a LILI graduate? Join us anyway, you will find out how the LILI program has been influential in the lives and businesses of your colleagues.

NAIFA-Wisconsin members came together on October 19th in Green Bay for a networking lunch, NAIFA Live Watch Party, and a LILI 7 book study! Although it was rainy and cold outside, there was warmth, laughter, and plenty of discussion inside. The NAIFA Live session was interesting and discussed the different types of life insurance companies and their roles in our industry. Following NAIFA Live we dug into our book, "The Carpenter" by Jon Gordon. The book is a quick read, and if you haven't already picked it up, I would encourage you to do so, you won't be disappointed. The author talks about how your life should be centered around loving, caring, and serving. If you put these into practice in your everyday life, everything else will take care of itself. After insightful discussion and conversation, we ended our day with happy hour. It was so good to be together in person.

Join your fellow NAIFA-Wisconsin members on December 14th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm for a Holiday Party! We can't wait to see you at PJ's at SentryWorld for a great time filled with holiday cheer.

NAIFA-Wisconsin members gathered at the Wisconsin River Golf Club in Stevens Point for a beautiful (but warm) autumn day of golfing on October 2nd. In addition to golf and networking, this year we collected supplies and money for Camp HOPE.

Join us in person at D-2 Sports Pub Stadium District for a NAIFA Live Watch Party on September 21st beginning at 12:00 p.m.! 

Gather with your fellow NAIFA-Wisconsin colleagues on Thursday, October 19th from noon until 4:00 PM at D2 Sports Pub for another great NAIFA Live event and an exciting book study of "The Carpenter" by Jon Gordon. Afterward, we will have a casual gathering at Lambeau Field's 1919 Kitchen and Tap.

Join us in person at D-2 Sports Pub Stadium District for a NAIFA Live Watch Party on August 17th beginning at 12:00 pm! 

Join NAIFA-Wisconsin on Monday, October 2nd beginning at 11:00 am for our 2023 Golf Outing! Come on out to the Wisconsin River Golf Club for a game of golf and to support a great cause, Camp Hope for Kids. Your cost for lunch will be: sidewalk chalk, construction paper, board games, water bottles, sunscreen, or a cash donation to Camp Hope for Kids.

NAIFA-Wisconsin continues to evolve to meet the challenges faced by our industry and association. These challenges require capable and willing volunteers to help us grow. NAIFA-Wisconsin volunteers work hard but receive a great deal of personal satisfaction and leadership experience.

NAIFA-Wisconsin members joined community members at the Greenway Arboretum in Fond du Lac to dedicate two trees funded by NAIFA. The funds came as a gift in appreciation for dedicated leadership in Advocacy, and especially the dedicated leadership of NAIFA-Wisconsin Grassroots Chair, Laura DeGolier.

NAIFA National President Lawrence Holzberg, LUTCF, LACP stopped into NAIFA-WI to attend their 2022 Sales Congress: May the Fourth Be With You.

Holzberg's remarks at the event reviewed the State of NAIFA and challenged insurance and financial professionals to be the best they can be as producers and as advocates for their businesses, association, and Main Street clients.

Legislation signed into law by Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers greatly enhances protections for consumers seeking lifetime income from annuities. The law was proposed by Senator Rob Stafsholt (R-New Richmond) and Representative Kevin Petersen (R-Waupaca). Wisconsin is the 23rd state that as part of a nationwide, bipartisan effort has adopted measures implementing the "best interest of consumer enhancements" in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model Regulation. The new laws and regulations also align with the SEC’s Regulation Best Interest.

2020 marked the half-way point of the Baby-Boomer generation’s retirement process. The early Boomers began pulling out of the workforce in 2010, and the later ones will continue to begin their retirements for the next 10 to 15 years. The generation before the Boomers, known alternately as Traditionalists, Matures, and “The Greatest,” are at the end of their lives on this planet.

Below are a few updates on the bills we are actively working on:

The OCI technical bill had a hearing yesterday in the Senate.  Sen. Felzkowski and Rep. Petersen are the authors.  OCI and Life Insurers testified, but there were no questions from committee members.  Introduction had been delayed from an earlier draft to work out a fix needed to the new cybersecurity law which provided an overly broad, unintended exemption.  I registered NAIFA in support of the bill.    

A new draft of the best interest standard for annuities bill was released yesterday and appears OK to the NAIFA and other national groups that were reviewing it for consistency with the model.  Hopefully it will now get introduced quickly.    The draft is attached.  Sen. Stafsholt and Rep. Petersen are the authors. 

Sen. Kooyenga has return from his deployment.  It is expected that he will allow the elder abuse bill to move forward, despite Sen. Stafsholt’s opposition in his committee.  The bill has already passed the Assembly.

New data security standards for the insurance industry passed the Wisconsin State Senate on June 9, 2021, on a voice vote.

NAIFA strongly supported this bipartisan bill, based on a national model, to provide regulatory uniformity and to protect consumer information.

Senate Bill 160 includes exemptions for small businesses that were supported by NAIFA-WI. The Senate also added an amendment that our Wisconsin members suggested, providing an exemption for securities brokers that are already subject to cybersecurity regulations by FINRA.

Hello NAIFA-Wisconsin,

I want to check in with everyone and highlight what has been happening around NAIFA Wisconsin. 2021 has been off to a busy start. It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached mid-year. I hope the first half of 2021 has been filled with growth, activity, fulfillment, and well-being for everyone. As a chapter, the first half of the year has undoubtedly been active. We’ve been to more than 20 legislative events, hosted many successful CE days, had our annual Day on the Hill event, and worked hard at delivering a meaningful and engaging experience to our members. I hope you have had an opportunity to participate in some of these and had thought-provoking takeaways to help within your practice.

NAIFA-Wisconsin is forming a LILI class in 2021.

The Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA-WI) will present its annual Day on the Hill advocacy programming March 8 and 10. The virtual event will highlight the importance of political advocacy for insurance financial advisors. Decisions by state lawmakers and regulators have tremendous impacts on the businesses of NAIFA members as well as the Main Street consumers and small businesses they serve.

The longer you've been in leadership the easier it becomes, right? Not exactly. The best leaders frequently review their strengths and weaknesses. They create a plan on how they can improve their leadership skills.
